Hi, We’re Scout!
Here, you’ll find thoughtfully curated goods and cards from small, independent makers, and mindfully selected brands that align with our core values and bring joy to your home and lifestyle.
Scout first opened its doors in September 2011 in beautiful Roncesvalles Village, a vibrant street in the west end of Toronto with an abundance of independent shops, restaurants, and Toronto's oldest standing movie theatre - the Revue Cinema. Over the years, we’ve grown a thriving community here amongst the residents and fellow business owners, we feel so lucky to be a part of such a supportive community.
In November 2018, we opened our second location in the wonderful, thriving neighbourhood of Leslieville! Nestled between other local businesses and restaurants, we’re so excited to be included in yet another amazing and supportive community.
SO MUCH MORE THAN YOUR LOCAL STORE
We’re proud to be a values-based business. Our core values are our north star and act as a guideline for our decisions including what makers and brands we carry, how we recruit and train our employees, and most importantly, how we interact with YOU, our dear community members.
SCOUT’S CORE VALUES
INCLUSIVITY + COMMUNITY CARE
Our community is at the heart of what we do and keeps us moving forward, and that support in turn allows us to give back. Giving back and taking care of our local communities is a big part of the Scout ethos and we firmly believe that helping those around us benefits the collective as a whole and lifts everyone up. We work diligently to make our community a safe space for all and use our platform to raise the voices of marginalized communities.
As a values-based business, donating to local charities and initiatives is a part of our business model and we’ll continue to do so for as long as we’re around! Over the 10+ years that we’ve been in business, we've been able to give back to so many incredible organizations.
Here’s a short list of some of the initiatives we’ve been able to support:
- Food Banks Canada
- Black Lives Matter
- Black Legal Action Centre
- Parkdale Community Food Bank
- Action Canada For Sexual Health and Rights
- Red Door Shelter
- Native Women's Association of Canada
- Black Women In Motion
- Nia Centre for the Arts
- The Legacy Hope Foundation
- Indigenous Residential School Survivors Society
- Canadian Women's Foundation
…and many more!
We believe in slow, conscious shopping and only making purchases that bring joy and delight to your home and lifestyle. You won’t find any pushy salespeople at our store or sketchy sales tactics on our website.
We want you to feel good about your purchases and encourage all of our visitors to shop slowly and give yourself time to take in the design of what you hold in your hand (or see on your screen!). The majority of the items we carry have fascinating stories and details from their makers that we’d love to share with you, just ask us about them the next time you drop by! Or, if you’re shopping online, send us a DM.
You won’t find terms like “fast fashion” or “mass manufacturing” in our vocabulary. We prioritize makers and brands with sustainable practices that minimize the negative environmental impact of their production process. In fact, we’ve curated an entire collection of goods that support waste-free living!
MEET OUR FOUNDER
Scout is owned by Leah Eyles (she/her), a curious and conscious adventurer with over 20 years of experience in the retail industry. Before Scout, Leah managed a small boutique, which helped teach her what goes into running an independent shop and started her on the path to becoming an entrepreneur.
She puts a lot of thought and care into each item she brings into the shops and loves adding new and unique offerings. Leah finds Scout’s thoughtfully curated collection through online research and in-person meetings at trade shows as well as small craft and gift shows. She is Scout’s boots on the ground, our fearless and kind leader, and our warmest smile.
